Windsor Tornado

This is not our house...thank goodness. In fact, our town was skirted by several tornadoes, but a neighboring town of Windsor got hit by a big one. The funnel was 3/4 of a mile wide! This is, however, the home of one of our friends. The front porch is in perfect condition, the garage used to be on the right- it's now collapsed around the family van. The wall that is standing in the rear of the garage, well, on the other side of that wall is ...nothing. literally. More than half of their house is gone. In our ward, three families lost their homes like this one.
The tornado hit on Thursday, and this area was closed off by the National Guard. By Saturday morning they had contained gas leaks and secured fallen power lines so clean up crews could get in. On Saturday our ward (several stakes, actually) focused on the families of our church, and they got all of their belongings (salvageable ones) out of the houses and into storage areas. Today, Sunday, we had Sacrament Meeting at 8am and then any who could go, were organized into work teams and went to clean up the rest of the town. The church provides bright yellow Tshirts that say "Mormon Helping Hands, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" for the members who go into disaster areas to clean up. Today there are about 400 yellow shirts cleaning up the town of Windsor. It's pretty amazing to see how quickly church members were organized and ready to help in different ways.

Get ready for more Mormons. Yet another group is coming on Monday to continue the clean up effort. These hail from Loveland and Longmont areas.
